As always, the service was amazing. I can honestly say that I've never had a bad experience at Dunes West Golf Club. One employee really stood out yesterday: Erin Lamarche. As is the case in the low country in July, it was hot and muggy. Just as we thought a cool beverage was in order, Erin pulled up in the beverage cart like a one woman cavalry. Despite the hot, humid conditions, Erin's personality shone through. Her sense of humor made us forget all about the lack of a breeze as the sun baked us.

I'd also like to mention Scott and John, the two member/golfers who took us under their wing and pointed out some of the finer points of the course. They were truly gentlemen. The old saying is definitely true--you meet the nicest people on a golf course, and yesterday was no exception.

BackYard PostGame Show #1

In the spirit of disclosure, you should know that I'm typing this in my backyard with the grill sizzlin', the ice clinkin', and the radio cooperating with a string of good music. Like a great song, golf transcends all borders. Roger Waters, of Pink Floyd (the early years, anyway), in an old interview, is asked by a reporter what the bricks represent in "The Wall". He answers that they are metaphors for fear, and as such, they keep you from reaching the things you desire. "Fear is what keeps one from making a great golf shot..." he says. I always thought it was swing mechanics, stress, or distraction. When you think about it, it makes sense. We hesitate in our swing, or don't follow through because we fear the bad shot, and in doing so, we create a self fulfilling prophesy. The shot ends up ugly, like the fear that bred it in the first place. So, the next time you're over the ball, remember to hit that bastard to the "dark side of the moon"!

Jacob and Cameron Stand Point

Every now and again, I stumble upon a restaurant or bar that I've somehow managed to previously overlook. The Point falls into this category. I generally have a beverage in the clubhouse after I play Patriot's Point, which, by the way, is amazing, but I recently had the pleasure of trying out The Point. Located beside the Shriner's Temple on the way to (or from) Patriot's Point Golf Links, this place has everything I expect in a bar. I enjoyed it so much, in fact, I invited my wife and a few friends out to check it out on Saturday night. There was a great band, "GoodStache" playing, and they were on it! The food was great, and the staff was professional and friendly. Jacob, the manager, and Cameron, the beerslinger, are gracious hosts who know their trade. I generally don't use this forum to give free plugs, but I always spread the word when I have a good experience at any business. The title of this post is a link to their website. He scored a double eagle. A hole in one is two under par for the hole, while a double eagle is 3 under. On number 10 at Charleston Municipal, Adam muscled his drive over 300 yards down the left side of the fairway. Even though Adam regularly beats our rag-tag crew of hackers, I still couldn't believe he was going for the green from the left side. I knew he wasn't gonna play it safe when I saw him pull out his 3 wood. He shaped the shot around the treeline, landing a foot from the cup, with a backspin that finished the job. No one could make that shot. But Adam did. We all did a victory dance for about 5 minutes after he removed the ball from the cup. (sorry to the foursome behind us...) Hal, Jon, Adam and myself signed the score card as witnesses, and I am going to send it in to the Post and Courier for a write up. Adam, you are a legend.

Brooks and Phil

James McGavick,
Muni Legend

Good Morning Golfers!

Yesterday I played Charleston Municipal, aka The Muni, with my friend James. Due to slow play ahead of us, we met the twosome playing behind us on the tee box of #5. We asked if they wanted to join us. They did, and it turned out to be a great round, scorecard notwithstanding. Brooks is a rising senior at the Citadel, and Phil is waiting for his ring, which should arrive any day now. Congrats Phil! It was a treat to play with these guys, even if Phil's drive is 50 yards longer than mine. Brooks kept pulling off impossible greeen-side shots that drew hoots and hollers and high fives from all of us. James, of course, kept the heat on with his putter, closing the gap I built on the front nine to beat me by a few strokes. Thanks for a great game, guys--Chuck

On my short list of Favorites: Osprey Point at Kiawah

I played Osprey Point recently, and it made me remember why I live in Charleston. She taught me to look out for the plants and animals who cannot look out for themselves. On the golf course, I slow down to enjoy the wildlife and plants that are abundant there. Mom didn't teach me to swing a club, but she taught me something just as important--how to slow down and smell the roses. Happy Birthday Mom!

Spring Fever

Alright swingers!
